Nova Hierosolyma (New Jerusalem)
Nova Hierosolyma (New Jerusalem)
In reference to the name of our church, The Lord’s New Church which is Nova Hierosolyma, it is important to know that the words Nova Hierosolyma are the Latin form of the words New Jerusalem in English.
References to the “New Jerusalem” occur in the Apocalypse, or Book of Revelation, and in many other places in the Old and New Testaments. The meaning of the passages referring to the New Jerusalem are explained in Swedenborg’s theological works, in what we call the Third Testament.
Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem (Nova Hierosolyma), coming down out of heaven from God prepared as a bride adorned for her husband (Revelations 21:2).
In Swedenborg’s Apocalypse Revealed (no. 879:2), it is explained that the holy city, the New Jerusalem, signifies a New Church to be established by the Lord.
In the Old Testament there is a prophecy:
Thus said Jehovah; I will return to Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem; whence Jerusalem (Hierosolyma) shall be called a city of truth. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets (Zech. 8:3, 5).
In the book Arcana Coelestia Swedenborg teaches that in this verse in Zechariah, Zion does not mean Zion, but a celestial church, and “Jerusalem” (Hierosolyma) means that church in respect to the doctrine of truth. To uncover the meanings further, see; 9055 and nos. 402; 3654 and 9166.
There are more references to Jerusalem, the holy city, as signifying a Church in Swedenborg’s Apocalypse Revealed. (See nos. 194 and 712).
And in the Apocalypse Explained no. 223, we read that the name of the city, New Jerusalem (Nova Hierosolyma), which is coming down out of heaven from God signifies the doctrine of a new church.
This doctrine is also given in a separate small work, entitled The New Jerusalem and Its Heavenly Doctrine.
