An IntroductionHow can the Word influence my life?
Life is eternal. Fulfillment and happiness in life are based on our response to an abundance of gifts every man is constantly given by the Lord; we can accept or reject them. We can walk the road of salvation and eternal life in heaven, or damnation and eternal death (rejection of life) in hell. The choice is ours. The Lord is constantly giving us means to the best, most useful end in view, but the choice to accept and use them is ours. The doctrine and beliefs of our Church – The Lord's New Church which is Nova Hierosolyma – are based on the systematic theology of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688 – 1776), Swedish theologian, philosopher and scientist. Among his readers and followers were some of the greatest personalities of their own or any other time, such as Johann Wolfgang Goethe, August Strindberg, James Joyce, Elizabeth Browning, Henry James, Sr, Jorge Louis Borges, Czeslaw Milosz, Helen Keller and many others. The core of Swedenborg's theological work was to reveal – as received from the Lord – the interior, true sense of the Word of God. True sense is revealed through symbolic and highly effective language of the science of correspondences, which teaches that everything in this world corresponds to something in the spiritual world. Through this connection the true sense and real usefulness of all things of this world is better understood. We believe that there is no predestination in human life, except one: we are all, by the Lord's never ending mercy, predestined to heaven. People could and should be saved, potentially. Anyone could and should enjoy the delights of conjugial love and heavenly marriage. Anyone could and should be regenerated. Anyone could and should enjoy eternal happiness in heaven. But only if we choose so. How do we do it? Let's see. |
